Could there be a new Once Upon a Time spin-off on its way? We’ve been following the love story of Alice (Sophie Lowe) and the genie Cyrus (Peter Gadiot) in Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, which was created by Adam Horowitz, Eddy Kitsis, Zack Estrin and Jane Espenson.
The first 8 episodes out of 13 have aired, and the series is now on hiatus until March. While the story is solid and it’s been very entertaining to explore the realm of Wonderland, the response to the spin-off has been mixed. The schedule has certainly not helped either, as the show found itself in a very difficult timeslot on Thursdays at 8/7c on ABC.
Somewhere down the line they changed the concept as it was originally set up as a series, intended to bridge the winter hiatus of its big brother Once Upon a Time. Then ABC changed its mind and aired it along Once, resulting in both shows now being on hiatus.
From the very start, the creators were adamant that the spin-off would tell one epic story with a beginning, a middle and an end. Should Once Upon a Time in Wonderland not return next Autumn, at least the entire story has been told without any cliffhangers.
According to E!Online there could be a new spin-off in the making, and this time we would explore the dark realm of Neverland. To be clear, nothing has been officially confirmed yet, so this could be just an idea for now.
We’ve just spent the best part of the first half of the third season of Once Upon a Time on the Island, and while it was certainly thrilling, it did start to feel a little bit claustrophobic. So much so that everyone was happy to be back in Storybrooke in “Dark Hollow”. Should they decide to make a Neverland spin-off, it would therefore be a good idea to mix the scenery a lot more.
However we shall not be complaining too much as a Neverland spin-off would mean the return of Robbie Kay, as the evil Peter Pan. His performance as Pan and Henry was simply fantastic.
Robbie Kay: “That is certainly an amazing prospect. If the opportunity were to arise, I would love to pursue that opportunity. I mean that would be a brilliant concept as a show, especially as Wonderland has been doing relatively well. So Neverland as a realm could certainly have a lot of exploration. It’s a very expansive environment, so that would be very, very interesting.”
Apart from Robbie Kay, the spin-off could also see the return of Lost Boy Felix (Parker Croft) and the Darlings. Pan kept Wendy (Freya Tingley) trapped on the Island for quite a long time, while also keeping track and manipulating her brothers John (Matt Kane) and Michael (James Immekus). Perhaps this will also be a way of finding out more about young Baelfire, and the time he spent in Neverland with his grandfather…
And let’s face it, who wouldn’t like to see the dashing Captain Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) have some more scenes with Pan, and flesh out their history a bit more? While in the winter finale “Going Home”, we saw a brief glimpse of Tinkerbell’s (Rose McIver) history with Hook and we cant wait to learn more!
Should the Neverland spin-off remain just an idea, it would however be a lot of fun to return to the Island every now and then to explore the characters’ backstories.
What are your thoughts on a new spin-off? Have you seen enough of Neverland in Once Upon a Time, or would you like to explore the Island again?
Once Upon a Time in Wonderland returns on Thursday 6 March at 8/7c and Once Upon a Time returns on Sunday 9 March at 8/7c, both on ABC
